A 1949 graduate of Fenn College, Lucille DeRoia Lang says her fondest memory is being the only female in chemistry, physics and math classes and often being asked, “Are you in the right class, girlie?”
Such remarks did not deter Lucille from earning a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in library science from Case Western Reserve University and enjoying a career with the Cuyahoga County Public Library, where she retired as branch manager in North Olmsted in 1988.
A long-time advocate for CSU, Lucille recently established the Leonard R. and Lucille Lang Endowed Scholarship to honor her late husband, a fellow 1949 alumnus. The fund provides scholarships for students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Accelerated BSN programs.
When creating the scholarship fund, 90-year-old Lucille reassessed her financial plan and redirected income generated by a charitable gift annuity she established with CSU in 2003. “The money is better spent on scholarships and I am excited to meet the recipients,” she says.
