Alumnus Tony Weinert created the Tony Weinert Theatre Scholarship Fund in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
As a busy CSU student in the early 1970s, Tony Weinert, BA ’73, one day noticed a poster that would change his life. It was a call for auditions for the Theater Department’s production of “The Birds,” an Ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes. Weinert, who had participated in theater in high school, tried out, got a part and the production went on to win the American College Theater Festival in Washington, D.C.
“After doing the play, I kind of found a home here at CSU,” Weinert recalled. “It was really a life changer for me.”
Weinert earned a bachelor of arts degree in dramatic arts in 1973 and ran his own improv company for eight years after graduation. Eventually, he would transfer those skills to a career as a financial advisor, but he never forgot the positive experiences he had as a CSU student.
To help make such experiences available for current and future students, Weinert created the Tony Weinert Theatre Scholarship Fund in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. This annual scholarship will support students in good academic standing who are majoring in theatre. “I hope it can really make a difference for students,” a grateful Weinert said.
