Sometimes support for CSU and its students comes from unexpected sources. Richard and Lela Schier, a Bay Village couple, had no direct affiliation with the University but strongly believed in the power of higher education.
Lela, who passed away in 2007, and Richard, who passed away in 2015, both established estate trusts to ensure that a portion of their assets benefitted colleges and universities.
Thanks to their planning and foresight, CSU was the beneficiary of funds to establish four endowed scholarships – two in economics and two in engineering.
Katherine, an economics major, is the recipient of one those scholarships and the first in her family to attend college. The Olmsted Falls resident, who works full time as a McDonald’s manager, saw her family home foreclosed upon this year.
“Scholarships mean everything to me – without them, I would not be able to afford college,” she says. “My dream has always been to continue my education beyond high school. This scholarship tells me I am on the right track.”
